We have big news:

In a historic step forward, New York City has officially mandated a new minimum pay for delivery app workers!

Now, the more than 65,000 app-based delivery workers will be given the dignity of the fair minimum pay they deserve. Under this new mandate, delivery app companies are required to pay workers using one of the following methods to calculate pay:

Standard Method

$17.96 per hour

Alternative Method

$0.50 per minute of active time

You stood with delivery workers and demanded this very moment. This landmark victory could not have been possible without the unwavering support of app users to secure fair pay for app workers in New York City. From petition signatures to donations, we could not have won this fight without your advocacy. Thank you!

Now that delivery app companies have lost the legal battle and the minimum pay mandate is officially in effect, they are looking for new ways to withhold hard-earned pay from workers. Most recently, several apps including UberEats and Doordash have tried to decrease tips by hiding the tipping option from consumers.

Alongside the City, NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, elected officials, and thousands of customers like you, we will continue the fight against the apps to #DeliverJustice and do everything in our power to ensure fair implementation of the minimum pay we fought for.

We won minimum pay for Deliveristas, but the fight isn’t over yet.

App-based delivery workers cannot win the fight for better working conditions without the support of app users like you.

Add your name to support our work so that we can continue to #DeliverJustice together for Deliveristas in NYC.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Minimum Pay

What is the payment method and how is it calculated?

The app companies must choose one of two options on how to pay workers. They must either:

  • Pay workers $17.96/hr for every hour of trip time + time spent on-call waiting for a delivery

  • Pay workers approximately $0.50 per minute of trip active time

*Tips will be added to a worker’s pay in addition to the minimum pay rate.

Why are the apps saying that now they will be paying $29.93 per hour and what does this mean?

This number is based on a misleading calculation of one of the options the apps have to pay workers a guaranteed minimum for their work.

The apps have the option to pay workers approximately $0.50 per minute of trip time. If their trip lasts one full hour, which is unlikely, this will ultimately result in about $29.93/hr of work.

Why are the apps explaining the minimum pay calculation in a confusing way?

Big app companies have and will continue to do all they can to keep worker wages as low as possible, including confusing workers to fuel infighting and suppress worker unity.

Los Deliveristas Unidos will never stop fighting for workers’  right to earn a living wage, and we will work closely with the City to make sure the apps are obeying the law.

Can the company use my tips to complement workers’ minimum pay?

No. Under the new laws, the companies must pay deliveristas at least $17.96 per hour before tips. The tips you give are additional on top of that hourly pay.

Does the minimum pay law force the app companies to remove the tip option at the beginning?

No, the law does not require the companies to remove the tip option at the beginning. That is a choice that DoorDash and UberEats have made. Because of this change, workers will not see your tips until after the trip is complete if they are delivering for DoorDash or UberEats. Grubhub still allows customers to tip upfront.

Is it true that, because of the minimum pay, consumers have to pay more?

The app companies control how much the customer is being charged and how tips are handled in the app. The minimum pay will ensure apps are paying workers fairly for their work and will not have to rely on tips to make a living.

Tips For Tipping

Can’t find the option to tip your delivery worker when you order in? It’s not just you!

Since the implementation of the minimum pay rate, big apps like UberEats and DoorDash are hiding the tipping option for customers in yet another effort to penny-pinch workers.

See below for a guide on where to find the tipping option by app:

Tipping options are not available until after delivery is complete on an order. To tip your delivery worker, open the UberEats app once your food has been delivered, select the order and add a tip.

UberEats

DoorDash

Tipping options are not available until after checkout. To tip your delivery worker, open the DoorDash app once checkout is completed and add a tip. You will be able to tip your delivery worker up to 30 days after an order has been completed.

Grubhub has not made any changes to the location of the tipping option. You are able to tip your delivery driver before or after an order has been completed.

ABOUT
CUSTOMERS DELIVERING JUSTICE

Customers Delivering Justice is a campaign by Los Deliveristas Unidos that aims to build a partnership between New Yorkers who use delivery apps like DoorDash, Uber Eats and GrubHub and the workers who deliver for them to secure a responsible and ethical way to order in.

We’ve launched this campaign to harness the collective power of customers to give app-based delivery workers a meaningful voice in the fight for better pay and to prevent long standing abuses they have been subjected to on the job. Customers will play a vital role in helping secure fair pay and working conditions for the more than 65,000 delivery workers who are  essential to New York City’s economy and resilience.

Together, we can transform the app-based food delivery industry into one where workers are protected and paid fairly for the work they do.
